Somewhere between your “hip” and “hip-replacement” years, you may consider buying a home. If you live in New York City, you will probably start checking out available Brooklyn homes for sale.  Brooklyn has exploded in popularity over the last decade.  Aside from the long-established neighborhoods, many areas that were once barely on the map are now enjoying a re-birth that has surprised even some real estate professionals. If you’re preparing to house-hunt, check out these 5 neighborhoods that are on the rise:

  •  Greenpoint: The wealth of new condos and former warehouses that have been converted into residences have been this area appealing to many first-time home-buyers.  The recent developments near the waterfront have also been a big draw for those seeking available Brooklyn homes for sale;
  • Red Hook: Big business usually heralds in new real estate development.  Ikea has been drawing people to this previously unnoticed neighborhood, and some parts of Red Hook have already started attracting the attention of developers;
  • Clinton Hill: This neighborhood, previously Fort Greene’s less popular sister, has seen a significant surge in real estate development, which have been drawing an ever-increasing number of home buyers over the past decade;
  • Bushwick: Once a kind of no-man’s land, Bushwick’s brownstones have been enjoying a renaissance, and the area is fast becoming one of the top places for real estate deals in Brooklyn.

Gowanus is another area that is on the rise, although it hasn’t yet been a regular feature on the lists of increasingly popular Brooklyn neighborhoods.  Gowanus may not be the usual area that comes to the minds of people seeking available Brooklyn homes for sale.  There is the ongoing issue of the polluted canal, for instance.  But over the past year, this area has seen a noticeable increase in real estate investments.  Many professionals who once overlooked Gowanus are now checking out the lists of available Brooklyn homes that are for sale in this area.
