Tips for Preparing Your Home For Sale

Posted on by admin

Every seller wants their home to sell quickly. This can prove challenging especially in today’s housing market. Although the New York Times reported that the housing market was rebounding in Brooklyn, house values continue to drop. As of July 2011, the median sale price for a home in the area is $515,000 which is $10,000 less than it was last year around the same time. If you want to sell your house in Brooklyn, not only do you need a real estate agent to help you get a fair price but you need to prepare your home so that it attracts potential home buyers and offers.

The first step to preparing your home for a showing is to depersonalize it. Certainly, you lived in the home for a number of years and it still feels like it is yours. However, to position it effectively so you can sell your house in Brooklyn, you must step away from your home and look at it through the eyes of potential buyers. Determine what your home’s most attractive features are and look for ways to highlight them. In the same vein, find ways to minimize those features in your home that may be less than desirable. Your real estate agent can be of great assistance with this task.

Strip the rooms of personal items such as photographs and family heirlooms. These can distract buyers and cause them to overlook the potential of the home which will make it harder to sell your house in Brooklyn. The buyer should be able to imagine living in the space. Therefore, it is best that your home look as neutral as possible. Repaint the walls to a nice neutral color, pick up the clutter, and make sure the home is clean. You want the buyer to be able to look around and see their own furniture and decorations in the home.

Make minor repairs on the home such as replacing broken counter tiles or fixing leaky faucets. Major repairs can be negotiated in the price of the home. However, you won’t sell your house in Brooklyn if the home buyer is distracted by the minor repairs the house needs. Additionally, if there are things in the home that you want to keep, like the stove or refrigerator, get them out of the house right away. Some buyers may buy a home only if the furnishings are included and you don’t want to accidentally lose items you want to take with you to your new home.
